First private home for aged inaugurated

Story: Fauziatu Adam, Adelakpo
The first-ever privately owned residential home for the aged has been inaugurated at Adelakpo, near Akuse Junction in the Eastern Region.
Funded by Facta International of Holland and Altinmarka of Turkey, the home, christened “Darlings Villa”, will also provide support for childless widows and care for the elderly who have been abandoned by their families.
Currently the home has seven rooms with four beds each to provide accommodation for 28 old people at a time.
Altinmarka is the biggest cocoa processing and chocolate manufacturing company in Turkey while Facta International is a Dutch Commodities Trading Company.
The Chief Executive Officer of Darlings, Miss Comfort  Ayisibea Tettey, said  this was just the first phase of a project by Darlings Villa, which would begin operations officially in June, this year.
To identify and mobilise widows in the catchment area of the home, Miss Tettey said four widows clubs had been established by the Darlings Human Development Foundation (DHDF), a non-governmental and non-profit organisation, in the Agona East, Bunkpurugu Yunyoo, Akuapim North and the Yilo Krobo districts.
For his part, Mr Paul Koopmans, the Managing Director of Facta International, expressed his appreciation to Darlings Foundation for its commitment towards the execution of the project and expressed the hope that the joint effort by the two sponsoring companies would go a long way to help the Ghanaian society.
The Chief of Staff, Mr John Henry Martey Newman, unveiled the plaque to inaugurate the home.
DHDF was established in 1998 with the main objective of integrating the disadvantaged in society into the mainstream of national socio-economic framework.
Darlings over the years has engaged in caring for the aged especially widows, children, and the youth in the rural communities around the country.
